Little Pigs Bar-B-Q of Travelers Rest is owned and operated by Pitmaster Kenny Powell Jr. Barbecue sauce flows through his veins. Kenny Powell Sr., opened the family-dining chain’s flagship restaurant in Mauldin over 30 years ago.

In the beginning, Powell began working in his dad’s Mauldin restaurant in 1988 when he was 7 years old. In 2009, Kenny Jr. decided to branch out and opened his own store in Travelers Rest.

“It has gone well so far — even better than I thought it would,” the younger Powell said.  “It seems to be building a little bit more every day. We have been packed.”

That has remained true for many years now. Little Pigs Bar-B-Q of Travelers Rest stands as a community staple.

Delicious Options

First of all, Powell’s menu is simple.

By keeping is simple, Powell said it enables him to focus on producing tasty dishes consistently. Options on the menu include chopped pork and chicken, burgers and ribs on Saturdays.

Powell said he uses only Boston butts, and he slow-roasts them for 18 hours.

If you’re not getting BBQ, other entrees include grilled cheese, corn dogs and chicken fingers and nuggets. Prices range from about $3 for just a sandwich to about $7 for a plate.

In addition, the sides at Little Pigs Bar-B-Q of Travelers Rest include baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, green beans, french fries, hush puppies, onion rings, and sweet potato crunch. Powell said the sweet potato crunch has been a bit hit.

Likewise, the eatery’s selection of barbecue sauces — a mustard base, a vinegar base and tomato base in hot and mild versions — is popular.

“This place, this town and this location have a lot of potential,” Powell said. “We’re focusing on the things we can control — the food and the service — and, if we get that right, this could grow. We’re excited to be here.”

If you’re searching for great SC BBQ, Little Pigs is not far from Furman University. Come on in.

What are Folks Saying about Little Pigs Bar-B-Q of Travelers Rest?

First, Google Local Guide Mark Bailey came away impressed according to his Google Review:

First time there and I was very impressed.

If you are searching for an awesome Bar-b-q, this is a must stop by and √ it out !!! Best Onion rings and Sweet potato crunch I have ever tasted !!!

In addition, Alexander L felt like  5-stars wasn’t enough for Little Pigs Bar-B-Q of Travelers Rest in his review over on Yelp:

Six stars. There’s nothing like good homemade barbecue, and if you’re looking for some in the TR area, this is your place.

Little Pigs not only has some of the best barbecue I’ve had anywhere, ever, but also offers a great selection of amazing sides, each of which is better than the first.

My hands-down favorite is the macaroni and cheese. It’s rich, it’s thick, it’s smooth, and it’s perfect. The fries are always fresh and crispy.

A lot of people might think that barbecue is easily done, or that it can’t really be messed up, and while there may be some truth to that, Little Pigs just goes to prove how it could be taken above and beyond.

The food is great, and the prices are unbeatable. Just stepping inside you feel that famous southern charm and anyone who comes to eat here will feel right at home.
