Dukes BBQ of Walterboro

Camden’s baseball team, SC Elite, a pretty talented 14U travel team out of Mount Pleasant, has played a few tournaments in Walterboro, SC, lately. Twice now, we have had the opportunity to drop in on Dukes BBQ.

My first impression of Duke’s was better than my second, but in both cases, this Dukes BBQ is the best of the Dukes we have tried up to this point.

If you don’t already know, there are a string of Dukes BBQs in SC. They are all, supposedly, loosely related by blood, but each Dukes restaurant is different from the others.

Mostly, they share a name and a rich, almost gelatinous, mustard-based BBQ sauce. Take a look at the photo below. It doesn’t look very appealing, and frankly, I don’t really care for it.

We haven’t liked it at any of the Dukes we’ve tried, but to each, his own, and Dukes BBQs around SC have made a living off the stuff.

Anyway, we visited the last time with Camden’s team during a long layover between games on a Saturday. On both visits, I must say the pork has been both tender and moist. The meat is obviously cooked with propane, and, therefore, lacks any inherent flavor other than that of roast pork.

One of the Simple Truths we’ve learned is that if it is not cooked over wood coals, the BBQ can simply not be called exceptional, and Dukes of Walterboro is no exception to that rule. That’s not to say it is not good.

The one thing this Dukes does well is provide a lot of choice in sauces. They have the standard Dukes sauce, in both hot and mild. In addition, they have an array of sauces bottled on top of the buffet line to choose from, including vinegar-pepper and some resembling Kraft store-bought “smokey” ketchup-based BBQ sauce.

So, at least they give their customers a broad spectrum of options.

As far as I could tell, they do not pre-sauce their pork, which you may know we appreciate. They do, however, chop the pork, so it is not a true pulled pork.

Their sides are typical country buffet fair. Nothing exceptional here, either, though we do like their hushpuppies. Deserts were available, but I had none in either visit.

Dukes had some tasty ribs available on our first visit, but they were not there on our second.

I would recommend you visit this Dukes if you are going to visit any. It is a good, standard buffet BBQ that will leave you full in the end.

They're mild sauce IS the best. I don't care for the 2 other choices: mostly mustard or the vinegar. The mild is just right.
