Juneteenth (Ribs Only – SCBA)

June 15, 2018 June 16, 2018

Our history

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the civil war had ended—freeing the last large population of enslaved peoples. Throughout the country, annual celebrations now commemorate this day of emancipation. Juneteenth today celebrates African-American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. It is our intention to continue this tradition in Spartanburg. The 2018 Spartanburg Juneteenth will include
(1) the 2nd annual Spartanburg Juneteenth Rib Cookoff (sanctioned by the South Carolina Barbeque Association);
(2) live entertainment including spoken word, gospel choirs, and hip hop;
(3) cultural exhibits commemorating the ending of slavery and Black History; and
(4) book readings and giveaways for the children attending the celebration.
