SUMMARY:Gaston Collard and Barbeque Festival
DESCRIPTION:How do you like your greens? With a side of barbecue? \n\n\n\nIf you like collards and barbecue\, then this is the festival for you. Celebrate the fall harvest at the annual Gaston Collard & BBQ Festival with a parade\, free rides\, games\, antique cars\, live entertainment\, and a barbecue cook-off. \n\n\n\nThere’s even a beauty pageant the spring before the festival. \n\n\n\nIt started out as just collards\,” said Gaston Mayor Troy Bivens. “The people who did it years ago would come together to cook collards and then they’d do the plates and sell them for a fundraiser. When I took over\, we kept that going and I added the barbecue to it. We started doing a barbecue competition.” \n\n\n\nOf course\, barbecue and fixin’s like cornbread\, black-eyed peas\, collard greens\, mac n cheese\, and pound cake will be available. \n\n\n\n(If you’re looking for great collard green recipes to make at home check out Rodney Scott’s collard greens recipe and Melvin’s Legendary collard greens recipe.) \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, the parade starts the day off right.  After the parade\, the festival begins at 131 North Carlisle Street behind the Gaston Town Hall.  \n\n\n\nThere is live music with bands performing throughout the day and free rides for everyone. Crafters\, vendors\, and exhibitors will also be there showcasing their wares. \n\n\n\nThe kitchen opens at 11:30 and will be selling Collard and Barbeque Plates that include all your favorite Southern specialties – collards\, barbeque\, black-eyed peas\, macaroni and cheese\, cornbread\, pound cake\, and tea or lemonade. \n\n\n\nGaston offers a clean family-friendly festival.
