Annual Blue and BBQ

March 28 @ 11:00 am 6:00 pm

Blue & BBQ Annual Benefit Logo

Blue & BBQ is an annual fundraising benefit hosted by Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. The event pairs live music and BBQ with a Modern Cowboy theme, plus hands-on ways to connect with the history the park preserves.

Guests can expect an outdoor, social atmosphere with music and dancing, BBQ service, and interactive experiences that often spotlight traditional skills and local history. Cowboy boots, hats, and a touch of blue are typically encouraged.

What to expect

  • Live music and dancing (often with guided group instruction)
  • BBQ and drinks that are typically bundled into admission (all-inclusive style)
  • Immersive activities that may include demonstrations (such as blacksmithing) and archaeology-focused experiences tied to the site
  • Sponsor/table options may be offered for groups and supporters

Who it supports

Proceeds support Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park’s preservation and education work centered on Mitchelville, widely recognized as the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States, established in 1862.

Planning notes

  • Dress code: Modern Cowboy is typically encouraged, especially something blue
  • Parking/shuttle: In some years, organizers have offered shuttle options as part of event logistics
