Stanton’s Barbeque is a family-owned and operated restaurant that has been serving some of the South’s best barbeque for over 30 years.

Stanton’s barbecue and seafood is not only a favorite of the locals in Bennettsville, SC, and the surrounding area but also of folks from all over the Southeastern United States and beyond.

Just off the beaten path just North of Bennettsville, SC, three miles Southwest of Gibson, NC, you can fly or drive up to some of the best barbecue, seafood, and country cuisine that you have ever tasted.

Our rural location allows us to cater to fly-in guests as well as motorists.  Many aviators and military personnel take advantage of our 2300 foot turf runway located directly across the street from our restaurant.

Our spacious dining areas allow us to accommodate even the largest of crowds whether they are our everyday local guests, passersby, wayward travelers, or large private parties.

Our unique atmosphere and delicious BBQ have caught on and earned us local, regional, and national attention.

Google Review

Among the many Google Reviews, Bob Rice decided to take a break from his COVID-19 quarantine, take a trip, and give Stanton’s Barbeque a try:

We have been hearing about this little place in the country and seeing a friend post pictures of it and the planes across the street in the field.

Having been stuck in quarantine for 3 months we decided to take a road trip and were not disappointed at all. We drove about 45 minutes choosing the long route taking all back roads from NC to SC.

The hardest thing was deciding what to eat. So me and my wife ordered 2 BBQ combinations to sample items and also a 3rd plate of fried clams which I love.

My daughter opted for a double cheeseburger with beer-battered onion rings. We were not disappointed in anything we ordered, in fact, it was amazing.

We absolutely will be going back.

In short, the building is spacious and the staff was beyond friendly.

After having a late lunch and were stuffed, we took a ride to Lake Wallace and walk off our meal. A great ending to a wonderful road trip and celebrating our freedom and still using social distancing.

The tables at Stanton’s were set up to keep their patrons feeling safe and still comfortable and welcome.

Yelp Review

Over on Yelp, Bob G was on a search for the best spot for a lunch stop on his way to the beach and found it in Stanton’s Barbeque:

After quite a bit of searching, we are happy to have found THE lunch spot for trips to the beach in South Carolina.

Stanton’s Barbecue and Fish Camp Fly-In Restaurant is the Real South. Friendly people who are happy you stopped in to eat no matter who you are or where you’re from.

They served a small but steady stream of dine-in and carry-out locals both times I’ve been there.

They did not appear to draw much through traffic despite a couple of good signs on nearby SC-38. But I have to think that the out-of-the-way location adds a lot more to the character of this restaurant than it takes away.

The Menu

The menu is not barbecue shack – it’s a broader range of Southern lunch staples. In two visits, we sampled:

  • Fish sandwich. A slab of flounder nearly three times the size of the bun fried just right and dressed to your liking – and at $4.25, one of the pricier (!) offerings.
  • (Double) Cheeseburger. Didn’t sample it myself but it was declared to be delicious.
  • Hot Dog. Seemed to have been grilled/fried, had a soft crust and somewhat sharp/salty flavor – excellent.
  • Grilled veggie wrap (yes, seriously). Wife said it was excellent.
  • Sides: Fried Okra (to die for), Fries (classic), Hush Puppies. I’m not always a fan – often too greasy – but these were as good as any I’ve had.
  • And of course, Barbecue. This comes in the finely chopped form common to Eastern NC and sauce on offer is a vinegar-based concoction.

Tasty, but my first reaction on finishing lunch was that it was good, but not Bill Spoon’s (Charlotte NC) kind of good.

Nonetheless, we took a couple of pounds to-go. (With a pound of slaw – nothing unusual about the slaw. Just perfect execution of what slaw is supposed to be.)

We thought what we took out was really delicious when we reheated it a few hours later. The take-out ‘cue was already chilled in a Stanton’s branded carry-out container when we left with it.

We wondered if there wasn’t an effect going on like with homemade spaghetti sauce where cooling/reheating imbues more flavor.

This is the Stuff

At any rate, if your travels take you this way, this is the stuff.

Oh, yes, and about that “fly-in” thing. They have a dirt airstrip just up from the restaurant.

Hard to see on satellite photos, and not directly visible from the parking lot – but the approach from the south goes right over the building. Didn’t see any planes on my visits.

I asked about the fly-in trade on my first visit. They said “we had three already today” and had photos of all sorts of aircraft on site.
