Hog on the Hill is an annual barbecue cook-off in Chester that brings together South Carolina Barbeque Association (SCBA) teams and local cooks for a weekend built around smoked pork, friendly competition, and a community crowd. It is typically held the first weekend in May and is organized by the Chester Downtown Development Association.
The event is designed as a downtown-style barbecue gathering where visitors can sample competition barbecue, listen to live music, and enjoy family-friendly activities. A kids area and additional attractions are often part of the setup, making it an easy outing for groups who want food, entertainment, and a relaxed outdoor vibe.

Public sampling is usually ticket-based. Cook teams provide small samples to attendees in exchange for tickets purchased at the information booth. This setup lets visitors try barbecue from multiple teams in one stop, then circle back to favorites before the day wraps up.
In addition to barbecue, Hog on the Hill includes live music and a designated kids area. Many attendees treat it like a picnic, bringing a blanket and settling in to eat, listen, and people-watch between tasting rounds.
In some years, Hog on the Hill weekend has paired well with other downtown events, including Chester’s Downhill Derby on Gadsden Street (hosted by the Chester Rotary), giving visitors another reason to make a full day of it.
