For one weekend each October, tiny Lynchburg, Tennessee, becomes one of the biggest places in the barbecue world.
The Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational Barbecue — better known simply as The Jack — brings championship cook teams from across the United States and around the world to compete at Wiseman Park.
Admission is free, and tens of thousands of barbecue fans pack Lynchburg for the competition, food, vendors, and the atmosphere that comes with one of barbecue's best-known events.
What Makes The Jack Different
This isn't an open cook-off where any team can pay an entry fee and compete. Teams have to earn their way to Lynchburg through qualifying championships and the event's invitation process.
That puts some of the best competition barbecue teams in the country in the same park, along with an international field that gives The Jack a feel unlike most barbecue contests.
Competition categories traditionally include chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder or butt, and beef brisket, along with specialty categories such as Jack Daniel's Sauce, Cook's Choice, and dessert.
Can You Taste the Competition Barbecue?
Here's something worth knowing before you go: The Jack isn't a public barbecue tasting event in the usual sense.
Most competition teams are busy cooking for the judges and aren't set up to sell barbecue to festivalgoers. You may get lucky and be offered a taste, but don't arrive expecting to work your way from team to team buying samples.
You won't go hungry, though. Food vendors and food trucks set up around Lynchburg, including plenty of barbecue, and cooking demonstrations have also offered samples in recent years.
More Than a BBQ Contest
The competition takes place in Wiseman Park, but The Jack takes over much of Lynchburg. Vendors fill the park and historic town square with handmade goods, food, and other products while visitors move between the competition grounds and downtown.
The competition itself is worth watching. Turn-in time gets serious as teams hurry entries to the judges, and spectators can watch the judging area from public seating.
The weekend ends with the awards ceremony, when one team leaves Lynchburg as the Jack Daniel's World Champion.
Parking and Getting Around
With such a large crowd descending on a very small town, parking away from the festival and taking the shuttle is the easiest option for many visitors.
For 2026, parking with shuttle service is available at Moore County High School for $10. Shuttle service runs from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Give yourself extra time. Lynchburg's streets weren't designed for the number of people who arrive for The Jack, and traffic and parking get busier as the day goes on.
