A Celebration of BBQ and Community
For over half a century, the Kingstree Pig Pickin’ Festival has drawn visitors from across the region to experience the rich tradition of Williamsburg County’s famous whole hog BBQ.
Held each fall in the heart of Kingstree, South Carolina, the festival honors the community’s heritage with food, fun, and a healthy dose of Southern hospitality. With a deep history rooted in the local culture, the Pig Pickin’ Festival remains a can’t-miss event for BBQ enthusiasts and families alike.
A BBQ Tradition in Williamsburg County
Known worldwide for its whole hog smoked BBQ, Williamsburg County has become a destination for those seeking an authentic taste of South Carolina’s BBQ tradition.
The Kingstree Pig Pickin’ Festival celebrates this culinary craft with more than two dozen BBQ teams competing to deliver the best pork cooked low and slow. Smoked overnight, these teams dedicate themselves to perfecting their entries, vying for prizes and the admiration of festival-goers.
Cook-off prizes are awarded in several categories, showcasing everything from ribs to unique creations in the “Anything Goes” competition, which has featured inventive dishes in past years. As visitors savor plates of slow-cooked pork, they can also cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award, ensuring that everyone has a hand in the fun.
Fun for the Whole Family
The Pig Pickin’ Festival isn’t just about BBQ—it’s an event designed for everyone.
“We are trying to give the community and citizens more to do after hours and provide activities that are family-oriented,” said Amy Pringle, the Main Street Kingstree Director. Pringle, who took the reins of the festival’s leadership in 2024, has worked hard to bring fresh ideas to the event while maintaining its longstanding traditions.
For families with children, the festival offers a dedicated Kids’ Zone that has expanded in recent years to include inflatables, interactive booths, and even a gaming truck for older kids and adults. The festival provides plenty of entertainment for all ages, ensuring that everyone in attendance can find something to enjoy.
A Welcoming Community Atmosphere
With its focus on inclusivity and community engagement, the Pig Pickin’ Festival is designed to bring people together.
The event includes a variety of performances, from local talent to fun contests like the popular Pig Squealing Contest, which invites participants to give their best “squeal” for a chance at prizes.
“One of our goals is to create an environment where people feel safe when they come downtown and want to return again,” said Pringle, highlighting the festival’s friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
Each year, the festival continues to grow and evolve, offering new experiences while holding tight to the traditions that have made it such a beloved part of the local calendar. From food vendors to fireworks, the Pig Pickin’ Festival serves as a reminder of Kingstree’s commitment to bringing people together and celebrating its cultural heritage.
More Than BBQ
In addition to BBQ, the festival offers a full day of activities, including a parade that winds through the heart of Kingstree’s downtown and performances showcasing local talent.
Festival-goers can explore food trucks and vendors, and enjoy live music throughout the day. The celebration culminates in a spectacular fireworks display, lighting up the night sky in true festival fashion.
New additions to the schedule in recent years, such as a Sunday Gospel Fest, highlight the festival’s emphasis on community and inclusivity, offering a relaxing and uplifting way to close out the weekend.
“We want everyone to feel welcome,” Pringle said, reflecting the festival’s dedication to making every attendee feel like part of the Kingstree family.

Additionally, there will be food vendors and BBQ sales throughout the event, allowing attendees to purchase meals and snacks from various vendors.
