City Barbeque in Rock Hill

By

Barbecue with a Drive-Thru on Old York Road

“Great barbeque brings people together,” City Barbeque president and CEO Mike Muldoon said in an announcement published by QSR Magazine.

City Barbeque brings a broad, counter-service barbecue format to Rock Hill, with hickory-smoked meats, made-from-scratch sides, regional sauces, and a drive-thru built for an easy meal on the go.

The restaurant is part of a multi-state barbecue company, not a homegrown South Carolina operation. Still, the Rock Hill kitchen smokes its meats on site, and its menu gives diners a legitimate range of brisket, pork, ribs, poultry, sausage, sides, and sandwiches to work with.

Hickory-Smoked Meats at the Center

Brisket, pulled pork, St. Louis-cut ribs, smoked turkey, pulled chicken, smoked sausage, and chicken form the backbone of the menu.

City Barbeque says its meats are smoked daily over hickory wood. The brisket is a particular focus, smoked low and slow before being carved to order, while pulled pork remains the familiar foundation for sandwiches, plates, and group meals.

For diners who do not want to choose just one meat, the menu includes two- and three-meat plates along with larger samplers. Those combinations make the restaurant especially practical for first-time visitors trying to get a feel for the full spread.

Sandwiches Beyond the Standard Barbecue Bun

The sandwich menu gives City Barbeque some personality beyond a simple pulled-pork plate.

LoLo’s Pulled Pork pairs pork with the restaurant’s vinegary Swine Wine sauce and creamy slaw. The More Cowbell builds around brisket, provolone, peppers, onions, fried onions, and horseradish sauce on Texas toast.

There are also smoked turkey, pulled chicken, sausage, brisket, and smoked chicken sandwiches, along with pork belly burnt ends and the Smokehouse Club. That variety makes City Barbeque a workable stop for groups where not everybody is looking for the same kind of barbecue meal.

Sides and Desserts Round Out the Meal

The supporting cast includes mac and cheese, brisket baked beans, creamy slaw, corn pudding, potato salad, collard greens, fresh-cut fries, green beans, hush puppies, and cornbread.

Those dishes make it easy to build a conventional meat-and-two plate, but they also give family packs and larger group orders some substance beyond the smoked meats.

Dessert choices commonly include banana pudding, peach cobbler, and triple chocolate cake. It is a familiar barbecue-house finish, especially for families picking up food for a gathering rather than sitting down for a long meal.

Mustard and Vinegar Sauce Options

City Barbeque does not lock diners into one sauce style.

For South Carolina barbecue fans, LowCo is the relevant option: a mustard-based sauce with a sharper, tangy profile. Swine Wine offers a peppery vinegar sauce made to pair with pork.

Those choices give the Rock Hill restaurant a nod toward the state’s barbecue traditions, even though City Barbeque’s wider menu pulls from several barbecue regions rather than following one strict style.

Easy Choice for Groups, Takeout, and Catering

City Barbeque offers dine-in service, carryout, delivery, drive-thru pickup, catering, and larger party packs.

That makes the Old York Road location a useful option for office lunches, team meals, family gatherings, school events, and anybody who wants smoked meat without planning a long sit-down meal.

Rock Hill has plenty of independent barbecue history worth seeking out. City Barbeque fills a different role: a convenient, full-service barbecue stop with real on-site smoking, familiar Carolina sauce choices, and enough variety to keep a mixed group satisfied.

What Folks Are Saying

Google Review

Among the many Google Reviews, Local Guide Stacy Dixon shared his first experience at City Barbeque soft opening in Rock Hill:

This BBQ place understands its business. We went to the soft open (thinking they were open) and they served us anyway. And by served, I mean put together brisket that is unbeatable in RH and a variety of sides that are delicious. Then the desserts…One of our favorite items on the menu is the huge salad. Friendly staff made this an all-around around great experience. This place is THE place to eat BBQ in Rock Hill.

Yelp Review

Over on Yelp, Michelle T may just become a regular at City Barbeque:

Really really good BBQ! We ordered the pulled pork and the beef brisket. We were asked if we wanted the lean or non lean brisket - husband chose the fattier brisket and I chose the lean- both were very tender and had good flavor. Our favorite was the pulled pork. Brought our peach cobbler home with us and that might be our my favorite! Would give a 10 out of 10!
