Moe’s Original Bar B Que, established in 2001 by three college friends from the University of Alabama. It is known for its award-winning Bama-style barbecue.

Their meats – including pulled pork, ribs, wings, turkey, and chicken – are all smoked over hardwood and served with two unique sauces. USA Today even named Moe’s one of the top 10 barbecue restaurants in the country.

Aside from their mouth-watering barbecue, Moe’s offers traditional Southern sides and scrumptious desserts made fresh daily from recipes that have been passed down for generations.

Their Alabama white sauce, which is a departure from the mustard, vinegar, or tomato-based sauces found in other BBQ joints, adds a unique flavor to their meats.

For those who prefer the classics, they offer plenty of red sauce and vinegar to slather on their famous smoked pork butts.

Moe’s scratch-made sides are just as delicious as their meats. They include potato salad, a marinated slaw that’s used to top all their sandwiches, skillet corn with sautéed peppers, sausage, and onions, and family-style baked casseroles topped with garlicky croutons.

And let’s not forget about their mouth-watering desserts. Moe’s serves up daily-made Oreo mud pies and banana crème pies that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Owners Sam Ragland and John Wood teamed up to bring Moe’s Original Bar B Que to Spartanburg. They opened Moe’s first Upstate restaurant in Greenville in early 2018 in a newly renovated historic building in the Westone Development.

“With a successful operation in Greenville, it only made sense to open our next location in Spartanburg,” said Co-owner Sam Ragland. “We felt the Hub was the perfect spot where there are currently not any BBQ options. It is a short walk to downtown and provides a gateway into the Northside neighborhood and Wofford College.”

Moe’s atmosphere, while different in every location, pivots around the South, music, SEC football, and whiskey-centric.

“There’s zero cookie-cutter about it except the food,” Wood said, explaining that each franchise owner has control of the design.

Wood, a friend of the Moe’s founders from the University of Alabama, said the restaurant seats 93 total, with 28 outside on the patio. Inside there provide booths, tables, and high tops, along with a full bar.

Ragland, an Alabama boy himself, began working for Moe’s in Birmingham, Ala., in 2006. A fine-dining and pastry chef trained at New England Culinary Institute, he was drawn to the flavors of the less-pretentious menu offerings.

“It’s not frou-frou, but it’s really good,” he says. “We take time making it. We’re not opening cans and boxes.”

It’s a great spot to hang out with other families for a meal or a great spot for a brew and to watch sports. The neighborhood restaurant also offers full-service catering for celebrations and corporate events as well as large party takeout orders.

What Folks are Saying about Moe’s in Spartanburg

Google Review

Among the many Google Reviews, Local Guide “Elias” clearly enjoyed the food and the service:

We came at a busy time on a Saturday lunch hour– The service was exceptional and didn’t take nearly as long as the line would suggest.

The food is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! We had smoked ribs, smoked wings, and pulled pork.

The ribs were so flavorful and tender fell off the bone, the pulled pork was great, and THE WINGS!

The wings are the best I’ve ever had no lie. I could rave about them for paragraphs but trust me you will not be disappointed!

The cornbread that came with the platter was perfect and flavorful, they had a daily side special of their smoked turkey white bean chili and that was awesome. Again, cannot recommend this enough but get there as soon as you can after they open.

Yelp Review

Over on Yelp, Cletus V raved about the same things:

BBQ was amazing! Great food, great service, and fun vibes!

They serve alcohol and have a great set up for hosting gatherings/socials. Their sauces are  delicious too!
