Mother Smokin’ Good BBQ

By

South Carolina Barbecue with Beaufort Roots

“We’re in South Carolina. We have our own style, and it’s wonderful, and we want to showcase that. People forget that South Carolina has its own wonderful history with barbecue,” Danielle Green told Karl Puckett of the Beaufort Gazetteand Island Packet.

That sense of place runs through Mother Smokin’ Good BBQ, the Beaufort barbecue business from Marquith “Roscoe” Green and his wife and business partner, Danielle Green.

Roscoe is the pitmaster, and Danielle helps steer catering, events, and the rest of the business. Together, they serve barbecue with a Lowcountry backbone, built around the kind of food that fits Beaufort County just right.

Puckett reports that Roscoe grew up in Brooklyn, New York, but his South Carolina roots run deep. His mother, Sarah Green, sent him to the family farm in Lobeco for holidays and summers, and his brothers Bruce and Ronald taught him to cook barbecue the traditional way: low and slow over an open pit.

Food-Truck Favorite Finds a Beaufort Home

Before settling into downtown Beaufort, Mother Smokin’ Good built its following through a food truck, catering jobs, festivals, and events across the region.

After years of answering the same customer question, “Where can I find you?,” Roscoe and Danielle found a permanent base at 101 Scott Street, near Beaufort’s Waterfront Park.

Puckett writes that the Scott Street building, formerly home to YoYo’s Ice Cream, is small, but Danielle saw that as part of the opportunity. “Now we actually get to sit tight and expand our offerings in one spot,” Danielle told the Beaufort Gazette and Island Packet. “People say, ‘Oh my God, this is small. But we’re coming from a food truck.”

That food-truck background matters. Mother Smokin’ Good’s downtown shop is takeout-focused, not a big sit-down barbecue hall, and that suits the location just fine.

Barbecue Near Beaufort’s Waterfront Park

Mother Smokin’ Good sits close to the water, the playground, and the walkways around Waterfront Park, making it the kind of place where barbecue can be carried toward a bench, picnic table, or river view.

In its own Facebook announcement, the restaurant described the move as “trading the wheels for a view” and promised the same “low-and-slow wood-smoked flavor” customers knew from the truck.

That is the practical charm here. Pick up your barbecue on Scott Street, then let downtown Beaufort provide the scenery.

Menu with Roscoe Ribs, Hash, and Lowcountry Favorites

“We just keep it simple,” Roscoe told Puckett.

Simple, in this case, does not mean bare-bones. Mother Smokin’ Good’s menu leans into South Carolina and Lowcountry favorites, including smoked turkey legs, hash, collard greens, yams, black-eyed peas, gold barbecue sauce, and Roscoe Ribs.

Puckett describes one of the menu standouts as a BBQ stuffed potato, “overflowing with gooey cheese, crispy bacon, smoked pulled pork and drizzled with a secret house-made barbecue sauce.”

Gene Brancho of The Island News reported that the expanded menu includes “ribs, brisket, pulled pork nachos, turkey legs and chicken,” along with “hash, collard greens, black eyed peas over rice and all of the other fixings you expect from a local southern barbecue restaurant.”

That mix tells you plenty. Mother Smokin’ Good is not chasing one narrow style from somewhere else. It is putting Beaufort-area barbecue, South Carolina sides, and food-truck crowd favorites in one small downtown shop.

Oorah Devil Dog and Food-Truck Favorites

One of those food-truck favorites is the Oorah Devil Dog, a foot-long beef smoked sausage sandwich that Danielle singled out in Brancho’s Island News article.

“We’re especially excited about our popular Oorah Devil Dog,” Danielle said. “It’s one of our most popular items from our food truck; a foot-long beef smoked sausage sandwich that everyone loves.”

The Scott Street shop gives Mother Smokin’ Good more room to build on items like that, including extra toppings and menu additions that were harder to manage from the truck.

It is a good example of how the restaurant bridges both parts of its identity: traditional barbecue on one side, festival-tested favorites on the other.

Low-and-Slow Barbecue with Local Flavor

Mother Smokin’ Good’s style is rooted in the barbecue Roscoe and Danielle know and love.

As Brancho reported in The Island News, Marquith said, “We serve the kind of barbecue that we grew up on here in the area, the kind we love. All of the meat smoking will be done on site to guarantee peak freshness.”

That line gets to the heart of the place. This is barbecue with a Beaufort County accent, shaped by family, open-pit lessons, festival crowds, and a steady belief that South Carolina barbecue has its own story to tell.

Still Connected to the Festival Circuit

Even with a permanent home base, Mother Smokin’ Good remains tied to the food-truck and festival world that helped build its name.

Brancho reported that the Greens planned to continue bringing the truck to local festivals and events. Marquith explained that those gatherings matter because “That’s where we got our start here, and where we’ve met so many wonderful people.”

That history gives the Scott Street shop more than a good location. It gives longtime customers a steady place to find the barbecue they first met at local events.

What to Know Before You Go

What Folks Are Saying

Facebook Review

Among the many Facebook reviews, Marine Charles Peoples shared his experience:

As a Marine stationed here in Beaufort, I believe in supporting our local businesses, especially the ones that take pride in their craft and treat people right. Mother Smokin’ BBQ is exactly that kind of place. They are a Veteran Marine Family still in service to the community and the USMC.

Beaufort is a military town, and it means something when a business supports the community and serves food worthy of a Marine’s appetite. Mother Smokin’ BBQ has earned my respect and my repeat business. If you’re in Beaufort—whether you wear the uniform or you’re just visiting—do yourself a favor and stop by. You won’t regret it.
