Pig-N-Vittles: Big Flavor in a Small Package

An unassuming restaurant in Chesterfield has been drawing barbecue lovers for the last 10 years. If you blink too fast, you might just miss Pig-N-Vittles. But one thing’s for sure, the taste and flavors of its unique offerings will leave a lasting impression.

Don’t take our word for it.

Pig-N-Vittles has all of the rankings you would look for in an award-winning barbecue restaurant. They’ve been recognized as 100-Mile BBQ, were included on the SC BBQ Trail, and have earned True ‘Cue SC Certification.

Chef-driven BBQ

Thanks to its classically trained co-owner and chef Logan Ring, all the barbecue and sides are prepared in-house from local farmer’s markets.

Ring is a former sous chef at The Pierre Hotel in New York and a graduate of Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in food service management.

He uses a layering technique for his smoked meats, which Ring cooks over wood coals. And you’ll love his award-winning sides like Pig-N-Vittle’s red slaw, tater salad and gourmet Brunswick stew.

The stew is a foodie favorite on social media. People recognize the quality and effort that goes into each batch.

For example, to make it, their turkeys are smoked inside the restaurant and the bones from the turkey are used to flavor the Brunswick stew. That’s just one ingredient.

An Interesting Twist

Asked to describe Pig-n-Vittles, co-owner Matthew Staton said the following:

“It’s a neo-traditional barbecue joint, where we put a twist on all the fixings.”

To enjoy that twist, you’ll want to try their black eye pea salad or their famous ham hock stew. The poblano brisket black bean chili as well as the pickled carrots are other delicious options.

How’s that for a twist on flavors?

In addition to barbecue and BBQ sandwiches, Pig-n-Vittles offers ribs, brisket, smoked chicken. You’ll also find incredible grilled pimento cheese and gourmet hot dogs (chow chow dog, Carolina dog, Korean dog).

The homemade banana pudding is top tier according to a number of online reviews.

On the social scene, Pig-N-Vittles recently has teamed up with local breweries. As a result, you can enjoy some exclusive beer pairings with their barbecue menu.

The restaurant also joins in on fun events like the beer and yoga event hosted by C-field Social. They are a craft beer and wine market in Chesterfield.

The restaurant, which offers catering options, also sells its signature barbecue sauce and 100-Mile BBQ destination T-shirts.

What Folks are Saying about Pig-N-Vittles

Google Review

Among the many Google Reviews, Local Guide Blake Herr shared his take on Pig-N-VIttles after having eaten BBQ all across the US:

Simply put, if you live or pass by within 50 miles of this location, it is a must try. I drive a truck all over the country so I get to experience a lot.

BBQ was tender, without too much seasoning, letting you choose how to take it with their 3 choices of sauces (vinegar, mustard, and a sweet based).

Four bottles of BBQ sauce on table

Brunswick stew- now I’m usually not a big fan. This was life-changing. Again not a lot of seasoning allowing you to taste the medley and the individual pieces.

Now, don’t PIG out completely. Their best item is their handmade banana pudding. After 28 years, I have finally found a banana pudding better than my Grandfather’s.

Staff is sweet southern. Clean facilities. All in all a home run for these guys.

Yelp Review

Over on Yelp, BBQ expert Mary B gives Pig-N-Vittles all the stars:

As a previous Memphis BBQ JUDGE, I will have to say, this place rocks!!

They had catered a Union County Chamber event that featured chicken and pork (smoked, no fat), fresh cilantro, beans and rice (amazingly addictive), and both a fresh red and green sauce for their Mexican-inspired catered buffet.

I am so glad to have had their food as I normally never stop at a BBQ joint due to my picky pork pallet.

I would have them cater in a Southern heartbeat! 5 STARS all around.

SC BBQ Association

Sure, folks on review sites often have great things to say about a place, but what about the folks who really know SC BBQ better than anyone? What about the folks who actually train the judges for SC BBQ competitions?

What do they think of this place?

In his review, SCBA founder Lake High wrote the following about them in this excerpt:

Pig-N-Vittles is a remarkable surprise for a small eatery found in a small town. The chef is classically trained and it shows.

The sides are all as good as you would expect in an upscale restaurant and it’s hard to say which is best.  I can say that the red slaw (they have a white slaw too) was my favorite, but the beans and “Tater Salad” were excellent.

The Brunswick stew was gourmet and a pleasant surprise.  Plus, they always have a “Market Side” which is some locally grown veggie that the chef has bought from a local market that day and cooked up.

Now that is quite a treat both as a tasted experience and not the sort of attention to upscale cooking one finds in small towns.

But it’s the barbeque that steals the show.

The barbeque is cooked in a smoker over wood coals and falls into the 100 Mile category.
