Conveniently located on Sea Island Parkway, you simply cannot miss Island BBQ Grill. If you’re on St. Helena Island, you’ll find it on the right-hand side of the road as you’re heading toward Fripp Island.
Just look for the smoke and small blue building very near the roadside. You’ll find plenty of parking in the back and outdoor seating on the side.

These folks KNOW their food!
We got a shrimp basket and a rack of ribs. The shrimp was butterflied and fried to perfection. There was just enough breading for crunch and flavor while still keeping the delicious fresh shrimpy flavor.
I could write a ballad about those ribs. They were cooked perfectly, so tender and falling off the bone. The dry rub was delicious.
They came with a mustard sauce and a bbq sauce and it was hard to choose which was better. Especially since they were perfectly seasoned— no sauce necessary!
It’s hard for me not to use the word perfect to describe the food at Island BBQ Grill. It was what we didn’t even know we needed til we were full to bursting.
It’s a tiny place for either takeout or outside seating. Wonderful customer service and fantastic flavors.
We can’t wait to come back to Island BBQ Grill!

We go to Fripp Island usually once a year and we missed this gem last visit.
Prior to leaving Charlotte NC, I did some Yelp recon and Island BBQ Grill made my radar. I could tell by other pictures and reviews that the ribs showed promise so I was excited to try.
First day here and here I am already reporting back to you all.
The Order
My son ordered the full rack of baby back ribs, his g/f got the shrimp basket, and my wife the shrimp PO’Boy. With the gambit being mostly covered I went simple with the 1/3 lb Bombay burger.
Yea, of course, I was going to steal a few ribs from my son and sample some of the others shrimp etc. ….this was for science after all right??
My burger was good and I’ve no complaints, it just paled in comparison to the glory of the ribs and perfectly cooked/seasoned/breaded shrimp.
The Star of the Show
The ribs were the star of the show at Island BBQ Grill. We all have experienced bad ribs… Tough etc. These fell off the bone and the dry rub was perfect in that it didn’t need the sauce…but I had the sauce.
Not only that but I used the dreaded mustard sauce. (North Carolina people know what I mean.) This bbq mustard sauce had some ‘zing’ to it that made it irresistible to a guy like me who enjoys a bit of spice.
I feel compelled to offer one small bit of constructive criticism. The Po’Boy needs a roumalade sauce. This would elevate the sandwich quite a bit and perfectly compliment the shrimp.
Finally, the staff at Island BBQ Grill were amazing and perhaps a family operation. There was a level of sincerity you don’t often see.
The gentleman running that BBQ smoker knew what the hell he was doing.
