Son of the BBQ Man

Durant’s Southern Style Foods is what you want if you’re searching for authentic South Carolina barbecue from a warm family who looks forward to serving you.

Taught at the knee of his father, the owner and his family run a restaurant to honor that father’s memory. Warm customer service and delicious SC BBQ is on the menu.

We’ll let him tell you himself:

I’m Roosevelt Durant, Jr., the son of late Roosevelt Durant, Sr., aka BBQ Man.

As a young kid, I grew up watching my dad cook whole hog BBQ on a cinder block pit in our backyard as he perfected his craft and served it to locals who would stop by on Saturday mornings for a fix of hot pulled pork, jars of sauce, and if they’re lucky, crisp skins.

As time progressed and the demand grew, I watched my dad go from roadside tents to his own brick and mortar locations.

While I wasn’t very attentive at the time, only interested in the finished product 🙂 little did I know one day I would develop the same love for cooking and find happiness in seeing people enjoy the food I’ve prepared.

A Dream Fulfilled

My father dreamed of one day seeing his sauce labeled and on grocery store shelves. In 2007, one year before he unexpectedly passed, I was able to grant this wish.

After much research, taste tests, and endless nights bottling in the kitchen, I managed to get the sauce on the shelves in 2 IGA stores and 13 Piggly Wiggly’s.

Fast forward to 2015 I began setting up at the local farmers markets, festivals, and catering across Indianapolis, IN. Over that time, I yearned to carry on his legacy back home where he left off.

After moving back to SC in hopes of opening a place in Florence that ended up not being DHEC approved, I instead landed in another location in November 2018, ironically less than a mile from where my father left off.

On the Menu at Durant’s Southern Style Foods

Today, that place is Durant’s Southern Style Foods where we offer a rotating menu of items such as (rice and red gravy, chicken bog, mac and cheese, greens, candied yams, pulled pork, baked chicken, and spare ribs).

We recommend calling ahead to see what’s on the menu before stopping by.

Our BBQ is low and slow pulled pork. We use a combination of propane and wood (oak, hickory, or pecan).

While we do whole hogs on occasions such as events and catering; we mainly use butts and shoulders from my good friend Gra’ Moore at Carolina Heritage Farms where he produces high-quality heritage breed hogs.

We also serve baked chicken as a part of our menu and spare ribs every other week.

Our sauce is a traditional Carolina-style vinegar-based with a diverse mix of ingredients that offer a little tang, sweetness, and mild heat. It pairs well not only with pulled pork but any meat from fish to wild game.

Hash is a specialty item that we serve only for a short period of time during the winter. It is homemade liver hash from our local hog farmer that takes an entire day to prepare. We simply serve it over a bed of rice.

In 2020, Durant’s started pop-ups called BBQ & Soul which consists of live music, vendors, and food. Due to the pandemic, it’s currently delayed but we hope to start back up safely in early spring.

Just minutes off of Interstate 95 at Exit 153, you’ll find Durant’s Southern Style Foods worth a 2-mile jaunt for an experience and taste you’re simply not going to enjoy at one of those fast-food joints closer to the exit.

It’s worth the drive.

Tried the ribs the other day and they were amazing, and their potato salad was refreshingly different.

TOOK A LOT OF HARD WORK

What I liked most about the cookbook was the bbq sauces – this took a lot of hard work. It’s worth the money. Buy the cookbook, you won’t find one any better. I have tried a couple of the sauces – they were real good!
