Mac’s Speed Shop in Fort Mill

By

Smokehouse Menu

At Mac’s Speed Shop in Fort Mill, barbecue isn’t tucked into one corner of the menu. Pulled pork, brisket, ribs, chicken and smoked wings are at the center of things, with more smoked meat turning up in sandwiches, tacos, bowls, burgers and starters.

Mac’s says it smokes its meats fresh each day, low and slow, and that means some meats may sell out before closing. For someone coming specifically for barbecue, that tells you quite a bit about the place before you get to the first platter.

Fort Mill joined the Mac’s Speed Shop family in 2026, more than two decades after the original restaurant opened in Charlotte. Co-founder Wynn Davis told Tanasia Kenney of CharlotteFive that the Fort Mill location would offer “the same authentic barbecue, cold beer, live music and laid-back atmosphere” associated with Mac’s.

That combination still gets to the heart of the restaurant. This is a smokehouse, but it is also a big, casual bar and gathering place built for more than a quick plate of pork.

Pulled Pork, Brisket, Ribs and Chicken

The straightforward barbecue platters are the place to start if you want to see what Mac’s does with the smoker.

Pulled pork is dry-rubbed and slow-smoked for 12 hours. Angus brisket gets an eight-hour smoke before being sliced to order and served with Western barbecue sauce. St. Louis ribs spend six hours in the smoker, then get finished on the grill with Western North Carolina barbecue sauce.

Chicken is slow-smoked as well, then finished on the grill and served either naked or with sauce. The hickory-smoked sampler lets two people choose four meats from a lineup that can include chicken, ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, sausage and both sliced and chopped brisket.

The wings deserve mention alongside the platters. Mac’s slow-smokes them before they hit the grill, then offers a long list of sauces and seasonings. The menu even makes a point of explaining that the pink tint in smoked chicken comes from the smoking process.

That emphasis is useful. Plenty of restaurants serve wings and pulled pork; Mac’s treats the smoker as part of the restaurant’s identity.

Barbecue Beyond the Platters

You can stick with a traditional meat-and-sides plate, but much of the personality in the menu comes from what Mac’s does with those same smoked meats elsewhere.

Brisket burnt ends are tossed in Western North Carolina barbecue sauce and served with pickled red onions. Brisket also shows up chopped on a sandwich, sliced over a rice bowl, tucked into quesadillas and BBQ birria tacos, and piled onto the Pitmaster Smash Burger with cheddar, fried onions and a fried egg.

Pulled pork and pulled chicken can be ordered on simple smokehouse sandwiches, while the Down South Rolls stuff pulled pork, slaw and mac and cheese inside fried egg rolls. Mac’s nachos can be topped with pork or chicken, and the loaded tot bowl combines pulled pork with barbecue beans, bacon, queso and sauce.

There is smoked sausage, too. The sausage sampler includes beef, jalapeño-cheddar pork and chicken sausages with South Carolina mustard sauce.

Then there is the Fatboy Challenge, which is less a barbecue tradition than pure Mac’s excess: an enormous sandwich stacked with pork, brisket, burger, bacon, queso, slaw and fried pickles, with mac and cheese on the side. Most people will never order it. It does, however, tell you something about the restaurant you’ve walked into.

Carolina Sauces and Smokehouse Sides

Mac’s doesn’t plant its flag in a single Carolina barbecue tradition. Instead, the menu pulls from several of them.

Western North Carolina barbecue sauce appears with the brisket, ribs and burnt ends. Wings can be tossed in Western NC BBQ, South Carolina mustard, Carolina BBQ or honey BBQ, along with several non-barbecue choices.

That makes Mac’s a useful stop for someone who likes trying different Carolina sauce styles without expecting the restaurant to follow one old-school regional rulebook.

The sides are familiar smokehouse territory: barbecue beans, slaw, collard greens, fried okra and mac and cheese are all available, along with fries, tots, street corn, dirty rice and a few lighter choices.

And if a barbecue meal does not seem complete without banana pudding, Mac’s has that covered too.

Fort Mill Location Gets Its Own Look

The Fort Mill restaurant was built from the ground up rather than fitted into an existing restaurant space.

During development, Mac’s Hospitality president Tony Salerno told Emily McGinn of What Now Charlotte that the roughly 5,500-square-foot restaurant was designed with steel and burnt-wood elements and an indoor-outdoor setup that connected the dining room, bar and patio.

“This will be a new look for us,” Salerno said.

That gives Fort Mill more of its own identity than simply being another pin on the Mac’s map. The larger indoor-outdoor setup fits the way Mac’s has always presented itself: part barbecue restaurant, part bar and part hangout.

The motorcycles in the branding are no accident, either. Bikes, beer and barbecue have been connected to the concept from the start, and live music and events remain part of the mix.

Charlotte Roots, South Carolina Stop

Mac’s Speed Shop traces its beginning to Charlotte’s South End, where the first location opened in 2005. The company later expanded around the Carolinas, including a Greenville restaurant before adding Fort Mill in 2026.

Through that growth, barbecue has remained more than branding. The Fort Mill menu still revolves around meat coming out of the smoker each day, whether you want pulled pork and collards, sliced brisket and ribs, smoked wings with mustard sauce or something less traditional built around the same meats.

For barbecue travelers, that makes Mac’s Speed Shop in Fort Mill easy to understand. Come for a full smokehouse menu rather than a narrowly traditional South Carolina barbecue experience, and expect plenty of ways to wander beyond the standard plate.

Absolutely incredible! This place has the perfect vibe—sexy, stylish, and effortlessly cool. The atmosphere alone makes you want to stay all night, but the food and service is what will keep you coming back.

Every dish was delicious, and the prices were surprisingly affordable for the quality. We had the unlimited hush puppies with honey butter, brisket quesadilla, turkey wrap, Carolina double smash burger & the pitmaster smash burger.

A huge shoutout to our server, Izzy, who was outstanding! She was friendly, attentive, incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, and made fantastic recommendations. Her service truly elevated an already amazing experience. Everything from the ambiance to the food and service was top-notch. We’ve officially found our new favorite spot and can’t wait to come back. Yelp Review

Over on Yelp, Richard L. loves having Mac's Speed Shop in the area:

Great addition to Fort Mill. We went in around 5:30 on a Tuesday and were seated right away, it got very crowded as the night progressed though. Our server Izzy was great, she checked in multiple times, kept drinks fresh and made excellent recommendations. Kids ordered from child menu and enjoyed their meal.

I started with wings and then pork platter. The wings were very good, burnout sauce was excellent. Pork platter great as well. They do a rough shred of the pork here so it stays in bigger pieces than some other spots, I liked that but might not be for everyone. Overall very happy especially given they just opened this location within the past 2 weeks. Will absolutely be back and hope the community continues to support them!
