Old South Bar-B-Q Co: “Best Butts on the Beach”

Old South Bar-B-Q Co is the perfect “hole-in-the-wall” joint for authentic South Carolina barbecue.

A seasoned barbecue pro, owner Butch Rives launched the first location of Old South Bar-B-Q Co in Cherry Grove.  Locals loved his ’cue so much that his business thrived.

While the original location, he says, was a fun, old-school BBQ joint, he needed more seating. So in November 2014, Rives opened his second location and eventually consolidated the business at the second location in the Windy Hill section of North Myrtle Beach.

Dusk at Old South Bar B Q Co

Old South Bar-B-Q takes pride in serving good food prepared with traditional OLD Southern recipes! You know it’s freshly made when it’s smoked just outside of the restaurant. All their meats are smoked with the patience of a by-gone era.

On the Menu

In fact, diners choose from a choice of meats. Chopped barbecue, of course, tops the list. Old South serves their chopped BBQ as a sandwich, tray (1 side), or plate (2 sides).

Sauces include:

  • Hot Vinegar base
  • Mild Vinegar base
  • Mustard base
  • Sweet Spicy Red

The chicken wings at Old South Bar-B-Q Co are so popular you’ll want to get there early before they run out. It’s not uncommon for orders of 100 or more to come in.

For those not in the BBQ mood, Old South offers burgers, dogs, chicken tenders, and even an old-school fried bologna sandwich.

Starters include BBQ nachos, BBQ quesadillas, chili cheese fries, and more. And the sides are all scratch-made, offering all the SC BBQ classics including Bar-B-Q beans, hush puppies, coleslaw, potato salad, and more.

Unfortunately, one SC original that doesn’t make the menu is South Carolina barbecue hash.

Ironically, desserts aren’t offered at the former ice cream stand, which looks like a 1960s-era Dairy Queen.

Old South offers various to-go packages and also caters.

At Old South Bar-B-Q, they live up to their motto: “It can’t be Rushed…Just Enjoyed!”

NOTE: Being a beach community, hours are seasonal. Call ahead.

Google Review

Google’s Local Guide going by the handle Fuzzy Red Camera writes about the coastal Carolina’s best in his Google Review:

Hands down my favorite BBQ restaurant anywhere around the Carolina Coastline!

I was raised on Hush Puppies and these are incredible! Coleslaw is very fresh, crisp with a light vinegar snap to it. My son does not like coleslaw but will eat it here.

Pork seasoned and smoked so well you don’t need a sauce, but they provide several flavors for those who desire. The wings are smoked so well they fall off of the bone trying to eat.

BBQ beans, corn on the cob…

In short, I have had everything on the menu, never a disappointment. I live 16 hours away, and I go to Old South Bar-B-Q Co every time I travel to the area.

Yelp Review

Over on Yelp, Brian C loved the classic cars and the classic SC BBQ at Old South Bar-B-Q Co:

The most amazing Carolina-style BBQ!!

For some reason there is a big hamburger outside this place — for me, you gotta come here for the BBQ.

We had the pulled pork sandwich and ribs with the baked beans. The pork sandwich was top-notch — great bark, tender and delicious.

Get it with the coleslaw and add one of the 5-6 sauce options they have, all of which are house-made. The beans were crazy good, too.

The main thing I have to praise about this place is the RIBS! Some of the best I’ve ever had.

Super juicy, tender, delicious, smoky, you name it. I would drive 100 miles for those ribs alone and you bet your pork-butt I’ll be back for some next time I’m in town.

Old South Bar-B-Q Co is pretty small so I can see how it might get busy sometimes.

The service was super friendly. Even chatted with the owner for a minute — he has a killer classic car collection that you might see parked out front if you’re lucky.

Don’t miss the Ribs!
