Gore’s BBQ: A Tiny Treasure

What a tiny little treasure I found at Gore’s BBQ & Country Kitchen.

Walked in and Henrietta Gore was sitting there doing a crossword. I introduced myself and said I would love to get some BBQ sandwiches. Then, I asked about a menu, and she said, “We don’t have menus” and pointed to a sign on the wall.

I asked about the ribs, and she said, “You have to call ahead and he will make some, but they aren’t always available. Not much call out for them. but he will make them if you ask.”

Your choice of buffet/dinners, BBQ sandwiches, catfish, shrimp, and something else. BBQ sandwiches $3.25. Can’t beat it.  Actually, it isn’t a buffet, but a small spread of items.

Items today were fried chicken, smothered chicken in gravy, pork chops, rice, pinto beans, macaroni and cheese, green beans (FRESH), and one other item. I think it was smoked sausage.

Asked me if I wanted slaw on my sandwiches, and told her, since it’s my first time, I will take it on one, and leave the other one “nekkid.” Cracked her up. Truly charming woman.

Corn Fritters Unlike Any Other

When I was behind the line taking the photos, she asked if I ever had a corn fritter. I said yes; she said “Not like these.” Put one on a plate…. they were thin as crepes and delicious.

I told her I bet they are really good with that smothered chicken gravy, and she proceeded to put some on there for me. Oh, YUM…….I could have eaten 3 or 4 of them!

She tells me of a woman that gets 4 fritters, 2 on the bottom, collard greens in the middle, and the other 2 on top to make a sandwich. Mentioned that fried chicken, Q, pork chops, fritters, mac n cheese are ALWAYS on the dinners, but the veggies change….

All the while, she kept asking if I wanted some tea. I mentioned how good the chicken looked and that I would have to come back for some of that, she said “You want a piece??”

They couldn’t have been friendlier!

In Comes “The Cook”

When I was getting ready to leave, in comes Ed. “The cook,” as Henrietta refers to him. “He is the cook around here.”

I introduced myself (again) to him, and he gave me a big hug and planted a kiss on my cheek.

Then before I got to the front door, he handed me a HUGE vine ripe red as can be tomato! Henrietta was getting ready to can them and had 2 large boxes of them.

What a treat! I surely will be back to visit this lovely couple. They are the salt of the earth, wonderful people. I bet they can tell some stories.

So if you find yourself planning an SC BBQ Road Trip, be sure to include Gore’s BBQ & Country Kitchen in your plans.

What Folks are Saying

Google Review

Among the many Google Reviews, Local Guide Tessa Sarvay met a wonderful couple and had a tasty meal at Gore’s BBQ & Country Kitchen:

***Cash Only*** beautiful couple runs this BBQ/fried chicken/pork chop place.

We were on our way home from the beach and just starving. We didn’t have a lot of cash, and the kindness and generosity of this couple were just so refreshing.

Incredible sweet tea. A hot fresh, very southern meal. Worth driving the three blocks off the beaten path. Bring your manners!

Yelp Review

Over on Yelp, Amy S enjoyed the food almost as much as the Gore’s themselves:

We pulled up in front of a small building, and the door was flung open and Mrs. Gore warmly welcomed us in. Her husband, who is the owner and the chef, had plates already to go.

First, he put delicious rice saturated with a wonderful pork flavor on plates. He had just caught some fish in a nearby river, and the vegetables were grown in his nearby garden but we chose wonderful fried chicken and two other sides.

The Gores sat down at a table nearby (it was nearly closing time (they close at 2 pm) and made us feel welcome and part of their family while they chatted and made us laugh numerous times. We felt like we were welcomed guests in their home.

The food was delicious.

Their son arrived mid-meal from VA where he lives. He was gracious and pleasant. The food was delicious and the barbecue smelled terrific.

Although both of the Gores are from SC, they both spent time working in a hospital in the Bronx which was familiar to us.

By the time we reluctantly left their restaurant, our appetite was more than satisfied as well enjoying a very pleasant afternoon with very lovely people who give their customers more than just food.
