Choc’s Barbeque Co. on Main Street in Cowpens is the place to go if you’re looking for authentic, South Carolina barbecue.

Pitmaster Jeff Jordan, Jr., was born there in 1980. He and his wife Laurie have 3 kids: Jordan, Elly, and Hadley. While Jeff has taught and coached for years, along the way he developed a serious passion for cooking.

He has been cooking competition BBQ with a close friend for years, and through this, he figured out what he was born to do.

“This is an adventure for me and my wife, and to be honest, I’m not sure where it will lead,” Jeff said.

“We are stepping out on blind faith and preparation. I do not have any formal training, but I have spent my entire life in front of a smoker.

“I know how to prep meat so I am able to maintain moisture throughout the entire 12-15 hour cooking process. The rubs I use are simple and have sweet back tones.”

A Bit of Background

You can tell when you taste the smoked meats he has perfected that Jeff leaned on his experiences growing up keeping a close eye on his grandfather, the namesake of his restaurant.

“No matter what, I will never get away from SIMPLE,” Jeff said. “I grew up watching my grandfather, Larry Wendall Lawson, nicknamed ‘Chocolate,’ make the best BBQ and hash that I had ever tasted.”

“His love for cooking and processing meat was passed on to me, and any time I am around a smoker, it takes me back to Cowpens, SC, when I was a kid. My grandfather’s passion for his craft is a huge part of who I am.”

What’s on the Smoker

All of the meat at Choc’s Barbeque is smoked low and slow. It’s done SIMPLE and they let the meat do the talking.

All of the side items at Choc’s are heavily influenced by Jeff’s mother, Penny Jordan.

“Her impact on my life is unbelievable,” Jeff said, “and her skills in the kitchen are second to none. Everything I do takes me back home, to where life was simple and the food was great.”

Choc’s Barbecue Co. serves pulled pork. They use pork butts a majority of the time, but they do enjoy cooking whole hog BBQ for their customers on occasion.

In addition, they serve pulled chicken, chicken leg quarters, brisket, baby back ribs, smoked shrimp and grits, and chicken and waffles. Choc’s runs specials such as pork tenderloins, beef ribs, meatloaf, smoked sausage, smoked glazed ham, and turkey.

Hash, Sauce and Sides at Choc’s Barbeque

You’ll find another classic on the Choc’s Barbeque menu, an authentic South Carolina hash made of beef, which is more common in the Upstate.

“We serve a southern beef hash that has been passed on thru my family for generations,” Jeff said. “We believe in letting the meat talk for itself and the seasoned pots to add extra flavor.”

Yet another testament to the quality of the barbecue at Choc’s Barbeque Co. is the homemade sides and sauces that they offer.

“The sauces are 100% my own,” Jeff admitted. “I have spent years working to make my sides and sauces unique.”

Some of the homemade sauces at Choc’s Barbeque Co. include the following:

  • Pop’s Mop- Vinegar based mop sauce
  • Sweet Sauce- Traditional Tomato based sweet sauce
  • Hot- Tomato Based Hot Barbeque Sauce
  • Mustard- Apple Pie mustard sauce
  • Crazy Carl- Dr. Pepper based BBQ sauce
  • Rolltide- Alabama white sauce
  • Hot Mustard- Spicy mustard sauce

In addition to Choc’s Barbeque Co. on Broad St., there is also Choc’s Barbeque Co. and Southern Catering, which consist of a Food Trailer and full-service catering company.
