A New Era at Husk Barbeque

You’ll find Husk Barbeque in the heart of downtown Greenville’s West End neighborhood. At Husk Barbeque, they focus on Southern cuisine and the South’s tradition of low-and-slow smoked meats.

Husk Barbeque emerged from the closures of Covid and the rich history of its famed sister restaurant, Husk.

Leading them into a new era, Pitmaster David Jensen brings quality and passion to a menu focused on smoked meats. Fried chicken, sandwiches and burgers, snacks, and Southern sides also enrich the menu.

The decision to reopen as Husk Barbeque was one made with much thought to what would best serve the community.

“We decided that maybe something a little more approachable would serve us well here. So we started to explore options,” said David Howard, president of the Neighborhood Dining Group.

“We kind of landed on barbecue because we’ve been smoking meats since day one at Husk, and seasonal sides are what we do.

“It also helps us that barbecue is great food to-go and for off-site catering.”

Authentic Smoked Meats and Husk Classics

The pit team relies on classic wood-smoking techniques but also draws inspiration from across the culinary South.

“We don’t want to pigeonhole ourselves with one particular style,” Howard said. He also noted that customers can expect a thoughtful barbecue experience. One driven by the source ingredients, whether that be tomato-based, vinegar-based, or mustard-based.

“Although I will say, I’m personally not a big proponent of meats swimming in sauces. We want you to be able to taste the depth of flavor,” he said.

Husk Barbeque offers a comfortable gathering place and a broad selection of slow-smoked meats.

Ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and house-smoked sausages stand out. Authentic Southern sides paired with Husk classics like their iconic cheeseburger, fried chicken, and pimento cheese dot the menu.

Bourbon and Barbeque

Leaning on the classic Southern duo of smoked meats and bourbon, the Husk Barbeque bar offers one of the region’s most extensive bourbon and whiskey lists.

In addition, they serve local beers on draft, signature frozen drinks, and seasonal cocktails.

Breaking away from the original Husk concept opened up options for Husk Barbeque. Those options enabled them to create a friendlier, more casual experience for diners.

“Look, the truth is, when I go out now, I just want to feel good,” Howard said. “I’m not so focused on who some high-profile chef is.

“I want a place where someone is going to know my name, a place that you’re going to feel appreciated as a customer. Not just going somewhere for the stage of some chef’s performance.”

But at the same time, Howard recognizes that the Husk brand demands a certain elevation and a higher standard.

That’s just what you’ll find on the SC BBQ Trail at Husk Barbeque.

Among the many Google Reviews, Local Guide Dan Farrow started the new year off right at Husk Barbeque:

Absolutely delicious! So glad this place switched over to BBQ.

New take a fried pickle and I am in love! They are sliced long ways making for thin, long, crispy fried pickles. If you are a pickle lover, don’t miss out on these!!!!!

The ribs were fantastic and the mac and cheese and greens beans were mouth-watering.

They didn’t skimp on anything, even my son’s kid burger was banging!!!

Yall have got to try this place out. Worth every minute and every penny spent! Our server was fantastic as well. Happy New Year everyone!

Yelp Review

Over on Yelp, Vivian Y highly recommends the new Husk Barbeque in Greenville:

Good choice! Pulled pork, awesome. Baked beans, awesome. Mac & cheese, AWESOME!

Decent portions, great service & casual atmosphere. Heather was fantastic & attentive.  The prices were a bit high but not unexpected due to the downtown local.

Cornbread needs a little something but the fries, the fries, Oh My!  The texture and flavor were perfect.  Crisp on the outside but soft in the middle,  and packed with flavor!  The deviled eggs were good.

We ordered the two frozen drinks on the menu. The Beast was tropical, yet not the sweet drink hubby expected.  Still very good.  The Wild Pitch was STRONG.  It seemed to be mostly bourbon, haha!

Looking forward to seasonal drinks that may be rotating soon.  We plan to go back and try different entrees next time.

Highly recommend Husk Barbeque!
